Indonesisches Meisterwerk in der nahegelegenen National Galerie

First time visitor to Singapore National Gallery and stuck to some masterpieces of Indonesian legendary artists; Raden Saleh and Basuki Abdullah.

I have been a long time admirer of Raden Saleh’s impressionist paintings, so I was so excited to find some of his artworks are the permanent collection here;

Boschbrand (Forest Fire), 1849, oil on canvas

It is said that this painting is the largest Raden Saleh had ever created, the dimension is 300×396 cm. This painting is showcasing European Romanticism with Javanese themes, earning him European acclaim (https://www.google.com/search?q=boschbrand+raden+saleh&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-id&client=safari).

Animals were one of his constant favourite theme;

Wounded Lion, 1838, oil on canvas

He also painted the eruption of Merapi in 2 versions; day and night;

Merapi eruption by day; Merapi eruption by night

Aside from Raden Saleh, Basuki Abdullah’s paintings are exhibited there too;

Struggle for the re-establishment of the democracy and the right for the people, 1961, oil in canvas

Frankly, definitely an odd and irrelevant title for the above painting. According to Basuki Abdullah, it was given by a politian, however, he wanted to name it as South sea mermaid. I personally like the combination of the colors in general.

And he painted futuristic landscape too- as his representation of the future of Singapore (https://www.straitstimes.com/life/arts/arts-picks-basoeki-abdullah-at-national-gallery-han-mengyun-solo-sg60-strings-concert).

Labour, c1950

And some busts of women- literally, sexy women. No wonder the title of the exhibition is Diplomacy and Desire.

I was so happy and thought about my Papa when I saw Raden Saleh’s Boschbrand. My papa who once took a photo with Raden Saleh’s tiger-painting in a museum in Vienna;

Haben ich dich gedanken, Papa!
